Our Family Day Trip: Boston to Salem in October
We arrived early in the morning at Boston Logan Airport picked up our rental through Turo—an easy way to get a rental without the hassle of a traditional rental desk. The drive from Boston to Salem is only about 35-45 minutes north, making it a very doable day trip with kids (just over 16 miles via I-93 and Route 1A).
On the way, we passed through the charming seaside town of Swampscott. If you have the time, I highly recommend pulling over in the cute downtown area for a coffee and a snack—think cozy New England vibes with plenty of local bakeries. We were too excited, so we kept going, watching the harbor come into view as we rolled into Salem.
The excitement really hit when we spotted The House of the Seven Gables. My husband immediately had his eye on lunch at Red Line Café, a tiny spot right in downtown Salem with only about a dozen seats. It’s the kind of place where locals go, but we headed for parking first.
Parking can be tricky in October, but we lucked out with easy street parking on Essex Street—close enough to walk everywhere we wanted to go. I highly recommend that you do a little drive and park close to the recommended first stop.
Our very first stop was the Salem Visitor Center, and I can’t recommend this enough as a starting point. The staff are incredibly welcoming and there are clean bathrooms (a lifesaver for little ones). Each of our kids were able to get their own map of Salem and they were thrilled to “navigate” the day and point out the red painted line throughout town! Inside, there are is a small but engaging display about Salem’s maritime history and early settlers. This is kid-friendly and free —our two were fascinated by the big ship models and stories of sailors (and pirates) long ago.
From the Visitor Center, we strolled just a few steps to Essex Street Pedestrian Mall, and the kids’ eyes lit up at the sight of performers and “witches” greeting visitors on every corner. With festive decorations, cozy cafés, and charming shops lining the outdoor mall, it truly felt like stepping into a storybook version of Halloween—bustling with energy but still perfect for families with little. I couldn’t believe I’d almost forgotten that this was the setting for the film Hocus Pocus! Spotting Town Hall was easy, and it’s fun to imagine the scene where the parents are under a spell, and the city really has the movie Hocus Pocus come to life.
By early afternoon, we were ready for a bite and headed to Dire Wolf Tavern for a late lunch. It’s casual and welcoming to families, it has an underground space for late night vibes. The kids couldn’t get enough of the mac & cheese from the kids’ menu, and after a chill lunch we were on our way for more family adventures in Salem. But first, coffee.
We headed to Blackcraft Coffee, and let me tell you, this place is unforgettable. The shop itself is incredible, with edgy, witchy décor that is Salem’s vibe. Beyond the coffee shop and retail shop, they offer tours for adults, yet kids will still enjoy the visual spectacle inside. The kids couldn’t stop staring at the 13-foot witch hanging from the ceiling, while I treated myself to a caramel latte and the adorable shop in the back.
Right on the corner, you’ll also spot the eclectic Gulu Gulu Café (a beloved Salem institution for snacks, crepes, and drinks) and, just steps away, the famous Bewitched statue. This little pocket of Salem is a hub of energy, buzzing with families, visitors, and street performers.

Afternoon Highlights: History, Gardens & Sweet Treats
- Salem Witch House – The only building with direct ties to the 1692 Witch Trials. Our kids were fascinated, while we appreciated the real history lesson.
- Ropes Mansion & Free Gardens – My favorite! The gardens are peaceful, colorful, and perfect for kids to explore safely.
- Old Burying Point Cemetery – Historical graves and tales of early settlers intrigued both kids and adults.
- Salem Witch Village – Street performers and photo ops keep the little ones engaged. We bought a bag of gemstones that we were able to pick out ourselves! This was a highlight for sure.
- House of the Seven Gables – A must-see, even if just for the exterior and gardens, which is what we did!
- Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie – America’s oldest candy shop (founded 1806) is a fun, sweet treat stop for the family. Very small to walk in, but also very fun and amusing.
Why We’ll Be Back
Salem is a magical mix of history, Halloween fun, and kid-friendly activities. Our two under-seven-year-olds had a blast exploring, learning, and seeing their favorite Halloween sights come to life. This trip was a highlight of our time on the East Coast and proved that Salem is just as fun for families as it is for thrill-seekers. My husband is hoping to go back soon, and we loved Boston so much I think we will fit both in again next year!
Whether you’re driving from Boston, taking the ferry, or hopping the commuter rail, use this guide to plan a stress-free, magical day trip your kids—and you—will remember for years.
With A Bit of Wanderlust! Cheers.
